In his evocative memoir Summer Baby, Wendell White invites readers on a deeply personal journey from the bustling streets of the Bronx to the serene hills of Montserrat, West Indies. A poignant tribute to family, culture, and identity, this memoir weaves together the universal themes of migration, belonging, and the enduring love of those who shape us.
The island of Montserrat itself emerges as a central character, its landscapes and people indelibly etched in his heart even as volcanic flows in the late 1990s transformed and buried much of the home he once knew. With time, these stories risk fading, lost when the last who lived them are no longer here to tell them.
Through vivid storytelling, Wendell takes readers on a journey of belonging, resilience, and the enduring bonds to home, even as the island’s identity was forever transformed by the devastating volcanic eruptions. This book is a must-read for anyone seeking a poignant exploration of family, memory, and the powerful connection to heritage.

Written with the delicate touch of someone who has lived the Montserrat experience up close – and from a distance – Summer Baby is the everlasting Montserrat story. Personal but not overly evealing, expressive but not intrusive. Home is truly where the heart it and Summer Baby is a Montserratian’s story for all seasons. It tells our story through the experiences of the writer. Wendell White has evocatively and delicately captured the essence of Montserrat.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book because there are so many parallels between the author’s journey and my own. I read the book in just a few sittings, eagerly awaiting the next chapter. The author’s use of imagery is keen and vivid. I was also intrigued by the pure honesty of the narrative in which Mr. White revealed the shortcomings of even his most revered loved ones. “Summer Baby” is a trip down the rabbit hole of a life defined by country, culture, change and Christ. I highly recommend this riveting publication.
